Strength Training in Your 40s
Getting ahead of the change, while it’s still easy.

Your 40s are the decade to get ahead of your physiology. Somewhere in here, perimenopause begins, often quietly, years before any obvious sign, and it changes the terms: muscle and bone become harder to keep, and the routine that always worked may stop delivering. The good news is that this is entirely something you can train for. What you build now is the buffer you carry into menopause and beyond.
What to expect
You’ll still gain strength quickly, the body responds well in your 40s. Watch the right signals: strength numbers climbing, waist and energy improving, better sleep and mood. The scale may not move much even as your body composition improves, because you’re trading fat for muscle. If you’ve noticed your usual routine "not working like it used to," this is why, and it’s exactly what a progressive strength stimulus fixes.
Your training focus
- Heavier, progressive loading, challenging weights that get heavier over time. As estrogen starts to decline, muscle needs a stronger signal, not a gentler one.
- Posterior chain & power, glutes, hamstrings, back, plus fast, powerful movements. Power fades faster than strength from your mid-40s, so we train it on purpose.
- Bone loading, keep impact (jumping) and heavy lifting in the mix now, before bone loss accelerates around menopause.
- Balance and single-leg work, laying the foundation early pays off later.
Nutrition, sleep, recovery
Protein matters more now, not less, about 1.6 g per kg daily, with a solid dose at each meal (~25–30 g), especially breakfast. Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep; perimenopause can start to disrupt it, and strength training itself tends to improve sleep quality. Three quality sessions a week, with a day between, beats forcing five you can’t recover from, adaptations need about 48–72 hours.
